What acidic form means
CBDA is cannabidiolic acid; THCA designates tetrahydrocannabinolic acid. The name refers to a feature of their chemical structure. In PubChem, the CBDA record shows a formula and molecular mass different from CBD’s. The letter A does not indicate a quality grade or a commercial intensity. PubChem: cannabidiolic acid
Nor should “acid” automatically be read as a synonym for danger or harmlessness. It is a chemical description. As with many substances, knowing part of a name is not enough to assess its properties in every situation. Full identity, amount, context and evidence remain necessary.
Why the report has separate rows
An analytical method can distinguish acidic and neutral forms. When reported separately, each row represents a specific analyte. This shows what has been measured and avoids hiding differences behind an aggregate figure. Readers should also look at units, limits and the basis on which the result is expressed.
In a scientific interview, Fundación CANNA explained its use of liquid chromatography to identify and quantify acidic and neutral cannabinoids. This illustrates why method selection affects the information available. The reference describes its work at the time of publication; it is not an audit of the laboratory’s current range of services. A chemical relationship does not mean equivalent quantities
Some reports include a “total” calculated from several measurements and a mass correction. It is important to read the formula the laboratory uses. Rows should not be added together on an improvised basis, nor should a calculated total be compared with an individual result as though they were the same quantity.
Consider two fictional tables. One reports only a neutral form; another provides acidic and neutral forms plus a defined total. The second has a different information structure. Comparing them would require knowing the method and each column’s definition. Choosing the lowest or highest number does not resolve the problem.
Chemical terminology does not determine legality
In Spain, Order SND/380/2025 expressly added delta-9-THCA to List II of the relevant annex governing psychotropic substances. Presenting it as automatically outside control because it is an acidic form would therefore be incorrect. Its name and regulatory treatment must be checked independently. BOE: Order SND/380/2025
This distinction has a practical editorial purpose: it helps us read analyses and news without losing information inside an abbreviation. A good text keeps identity, measurement and regulatory status separate. It need not turn chemistry into a guide to use; showing why each row exists and which questions remain open when a report offers only one summary figure is enough.
